Powl is Lights Out as Dukes Shutout Gulls, 5-0
Pittsfield, Mass. (July 26, 2007) – Chris Powl (West Chester
University) won his fourth consecutive decision and the Dukes won
their fifth in his last five starts on the strength of his seven
shutout innings.
Powl surrendered just three hits and two walks while striking out
two. He did not allow a Gull to reach third base and never had more
than one baserunner on at any given point in the game. He turned the
ball to Yadiel Lanzo (Keystone College) in the eighth and Lanzo was
able to shut the door, giving up a hit and walk while striking out
three.
The Dukes jumped on Newport starter Jared Yecker (St. John’s
University) in the bottom of the first. Alex Hassan (Duke
University) walked and was followed promptly by a Tony DiCesare
(Northeastern University) bunt single to put two on with no one out.
Scott Savastano (Franklin Pierce University) drove in the game’s
first run with a single up the middle plating Hassan. Savastano
stayed hot, ending the night 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI singles, the
second of which came in the seventh, again scoring Hassan, this time
with the Dukes’ fifth run of the game.
With the win the Dukes stay alive in the Southern Division playoff
picture. They are now just two games behind Danbury, and five and
half back of Manchester for the fourth and final playoff spot in the
South.
The Dukes will have their opportunities to try and make up ground as
they will play a doubleheader against the Westerners Friday with the
first game starting at 5 at Wahconah Park. Saturday the Dukes and
SteepleCats will combine on the NECBL’s first ever home-and-home
twin bill. Game one is at 1 o’clock at Wahconah Park and game two is
at 7 at Joe Wolfe Field in North Adams.
