Twisters Keep Dukes’ Bats Quiet, Win 4-1 at Wahconah
Pittsfield, Mass. (Wednesday July 25, 2007) – After dropping a
doubleheader to North Adams yesterday and surrendering their lead in
the Southern Division for the first time in weeks, the Torrington
Twisters exacted their revenge on the Pittsfield Dukes.
Kyle Hoffman (James Madison University) was outstanding for
Torrington, he went eight innings, allowing just one unearned run
walking one and striking out six en route to his third win of the
year, and his second against Pittsfield.
Hoffman handed his lead to 19 year-old fire-baller Steve Strasburg
(San Diego State University) who sat the Dukes down in order in the
ninth. Strasburg struck out two and induced a groundout on the way
to his seventh save. He has now struck out 21 batters in just 12
innings this season.
The Dukes got a solid starting effort from Bob Buskett (College of
New Jersey) who went six innings, giving up three runs, two of them
earned, on six hits and three walks, he did strike out seven
Twisters on the outing.
The Dukes had just six hits on the night and only two players
notched multiple hits on the night. Scott Savastano (Franklin Pierce
University) had hits in each of his first two at-bats and ended the
night at 2-for-4. Keli’i Zablan (Southern Utah University) also had
two hits including an RBI single in the second plating Jeff Lieneck
(Wheaton College) that made the score 2-1 at the time.
Tyler Stampone (The College of the Holy Cross) left the game with
what appeared to be concussion like symptoms after a collision with
Torrington’s catcher Myckie Lugbauer (University of Maine). The play
it occurred on was an interesting one, Savastano chopped a ball off
of homeplate that went to Twister shortstop Chris Klepps (Siena
University) who made an errant throw to first on a play that would
be ruled a hit with an error. On the overthrow Stampone attempted to
score all the way from first but was tagged out by Lugbauer, who
then threw to third, nailing Savastano for an inning ending
doubleplay.
The Dukes are home again Thursday against the Southern Division
leading Newport Gulls at 7. They will play a doubleheader starting
at 5 on Friday against the Danbury Westerners. Saturday is the
home-and-home doubleheader against the SteepleCats with game one at
1 o’clock at Wahconah Park and game two at 7 at Joe Wolfe Field in
North Adams.
