Dukes Top Russian National Team 3-2

Pittsfield, Mass. (Monday July 16, 2007) – It was a sloppily played game that saw eight errors combined from the two squads, but the Dukes were able to grab the win, scoring their third and final run on an error in the eighth.

Mitch Duggins (Northeastern University) got his first start of the year for Pittsfield and responded well. Duggins went five innings, giving up two runs, just one earned, on four hits, two walks and two strikeouts.

Paul Heidler (Longwood University) picked up the win for Pittsfield, tossing a scoreless eighth and ninth. Heidler, who made his first appearance on the mound, allowed just one baserunner, a ninth inning walk, and struck out four on the evening.
Heidler also drove in the first two Dukes runs of the ballgame. The first on a sacrifice fly in the second that plated Dan Capeless (Georgetown University), and the second on an RBI groundout in the fourth that scored Phil Cerreto (Longwood University).

There were very few offensive fireworks on the night as the teams only combined for eleven hits on the night. Cerreto was the only Duke with two hits on the night. Capeless, Keli’i Zablan (Southern Utah University), Adam Tempesta (University of Massachusetts), and Sam Shaughnessy (Boston College) each had a hit on night.

Shaughnessy was the only Dukes to have an extra base hit, he drove a triple off of the top of the right field wall, about 360 feet from home plate in the eighth, and score the game’s winning run.

The Dukes hit the road Tuesday as they make the journey up to Keene to face the Swamp Bats, whom they have not seen since the second game of the season.
