Stampone’s Tenth Inning Walk-Off Wins it for the Dukes
Pittsfield, Mass. (Saturday July 14, 2007) – The Pittsfield Dukes
rebounded from the a sweep on Friday, and a four run deficit heading
to the home half of the eighth to knock off the Holyoke Giants in
extra innings from Wahconah Park.
Tyler Stampone (The College of the Holy Cross) came to the plate
with Paul Heidler (Longwood University) and Alex Hassan (Duke
University) on the corners and two away in the tenth. Stampone lined
a 1-0 fastball from Brandon Aich (Kean University) into leftfield
plating Heidler and giving the Dukes a 9-8 extra inning win.
The Dukes entered the bottom the eighth down 8-4. Scott Savastano
(Franklin Pierce College) led off the frame with a single, his
fourth hit of the game, but was followed by back-to-back strikeouts.
Savastano did steal second and was able to score on a Chester Wilson
(Southern Utah University) two-out RBI single up the middle.
Mitch Duggins (Northeastern University), who took over with one out
in the eighth, pitched an inning and a third of scoreless relief for
the Dukes, keeping Pittsfield within striking distance.
Duggins gave way to Yadiel Lanzo (Keystone College) with a man on
third and two away in the tenth. Lanzo plunked the first batter he
faced, then struck out Holyoke’s leading hitter Kyle Bellows (San
Jose State University) on a high heater to retire the side. Lanzo
picked up the win, his first of the year, after throwing just six
pitches on the night.
Every Duke had a hit in the ballgame with the exception of the
team’s leading hitter Jeff Lieneck (Wheaton College). Savastano led
the way with four hits and three runs scored, Tony DiCesare
(Northeastern University) and Heidler each had three hits, while
Hassan and Stampone each had a pair of hits, both getting their two
hits in the ninth and tenth innings. Hassan scored twice, while
Stampone drove in three.
