Dukes Blast Mainers 11-3 at Wahconah Park

Pittsfield, Mass. (July 12, 2007) – Chris Powl (West Chester University) threw another complete game, his second of the season, and won his third straight decision for the Pittsfield Dukes who have won back-to-back games for just the third time this season.

The Dukes, whose eleven runs was more than their last six home games combined, pounded out twelve hits against Mainer pitching and scored runs in the first, third, fourth, sixth and eighth innings.

The third inning was the undoing to the Sanford Mainers as five runs crossed on five hits by the Dukes. Alex Hassan (Duke University) got the ball rolling with a leadoff single up the middle. Tony DiCesare (Northeastern University), who ended the night 2-for-4 with three RBIs and three runs scored, smashed a run-scoring triple to right field plating Hassan.

Tyler Stampone (The College of the Holy Cross), who also had a big night, 3-for-5 with two doubles, and RBI and a run scored, drove in DiCesare with a double to centerfield that shot off the glove of Sanford second baseman Kyle Meyer (Marist College) who attempted to make a diving play in the outfield.

Scott Savastano (Franklin Pierce College) had a sacrifice fly in the inning, Chester Wilson (Southern Utah University) doubled and scored. Sam Shaughnessy (Boston College) reached on an error and scored on a Jeff Lieneck (Wheaton College). Lieneck was 4-for-4 with two doubles, two runs scored, and a run driven in on the night.

The game got off on an interesting start as there was a 39 minute sun-delay in the bottom of the first during, what ended up being a 45 minute at bat from Savastano.

Powl was unfazed through the delay and long innings by his teammates, going the distance for the second time in three starts. In his last four appearances Powl is 3-0 with a save. He has logged 28 innings, surrendering just six runs and has improved his strikeout to walk ratio to 27 to four.

The Dukes will finish the game that was rained out at Wahconah Park on July 5th at 4 p.m. in North Adams and then will play game four of the Battle of the Berkshires Series against the SteepleCats at 7 at Joe Wolfe Field.
