Dukes Win Sixth Straight Road Game, 4-3 in Concord
Concord, New Hampshire. (Wednesday July 11, 2007) – Jose Mendoza
(University of Maine) made another quality start for the Dukes and
picked up second win of the season as the Dukes held off the Quarry
Dogs 4-3 at the Doane Diamond at Memorial Field.
Mendoza, whose last outing was terminated after three and a third
innings against the North Adams SteepleCats on July 5th, went six
solid innings, surrendering three runs, only one earned, on four
hits.
The earned run Mendoza allowed came on a solo homerun by Concord’s
Jake Smith (University of Alabama) to lead off the bottom of the
fifth. The two unearned runs came in sixth as a Nelson Gomez
(Keystone College) throwing error allowed one run to score and set
up another in the frame.
Jack Bender (Georgetown University) came in to pitch the final three
innings of the game and did so perfectly, facing the minimum nine
batters, retiring all of them including a strikeout for the final of
the ballgame.
Scott Savastano (Franklin Pierce College) become just the second
Pittsfield Duke to notch a three hits in a game. Savastano, joined
Jim MacDonald (University of Massachusetts) who had three hits
against Lowell on June 28th, had two singles and a two-out two-run
double in the top of the third. He later came around to score on a
MacDonald single.
Chester Wilson (Southern Utah University) and Jeff Rustico (American
International College) each added two hits for the Dukes, who
pounded out eleven hits on the night.
The Dukes will be back home Thursday night as they will take on the
Sanford Mainers at 7 p.m. at Wahconah Park. Pittsfield will travel
to North Adams Friday night to take on the SteepleCats in Game 4 of
the Battle of the Berkshires series and will be home Saturday,
Sunday and Monday.
