Dukes Blanked at Home for Second Straight Night, Fall to Newport 3-0
Pittsfield, Mass. (Sunday July 8, 2007) – The Dukes managed just
five hits and had just three runners in scoring position all night,
as they struggled at the bat again en route to their second straight
home loss by way of the shutout.
Arric Mather (Franklin Pierce College) was saddled with the loss
after going six innings, allowing three runs, two of them earned, on
five hits, four walks while striking out three.
Mather was out-dueled by Andre Carraway (University of Virginia) who
went six shutout innings for the Gulls, allowing just five hits and
two walks, he struck out six Dukes, all looking.
The Gulls bullpen was equally impressive as Bryce Mooney (University
of Washington) and Mike Seander (Duke University) combined on three
perfect innings, Mooney going the seventh and eighth, and Seander
the ninth for his seventh save of the year.
A couple of Dukes had extra base hits in the ballgame. Tyler
Stampone (The College of the Holy Cross) lined a triple to center in
the first, but was stranded at third at the innings’ end. Also Jim
MacDonald (University of Massachusetts) lined a double off of the
vintage Wahconah Park scoreboard in deep left center.
Those were the Dukes best scoring opportunities along with a first
and third situation that had following consecutive singles from Tony
DiCesare (Northeastern University) and Phil Cerreto (Longwood
University) in the fourth. This was the only time the Dukes had more
than one hit in any inning.
The Dukes conclude their five game home stand tomorrow night as they
make up the Fourth of July rainout against the Manchester Silkworms
at 7 p.m. Tickets for the July 4th game will be accepted at the
gate.
Season tickets for the Dukes are still available. Tickets can be
