Novakowski Outduels Buskett, Twisters Top Dukes 1-0

Pittsfield, Mass. (Saturday July 7, 2007) – Bob Buskett (College of New Jersey) threw a complete game, giving up just one run on eight hits, he struck out three and walked one, and was saddled with the tough luck loss in front of a huge crowd at Wahconah Park.

Over 4,700 fans watched Gary Novakowski (Stony Brook College) go seven strong for the Twisters, only allowing one hit, a two out single in the fourth to Kel’ii Zablan (Southern Utah Univeristy), two walks and one hit batsman, just four baserunners and no one reaching scoring position.

The performance from Novakowski was more than enough as the Dukes had no answer for the right-hander, who had not thrown in ten days due to three consecutive rain outs for the Southern Division leading Twisters.

The Dukes best scoring opportunity came with two outs in the bottom of the ninth. After Zablan and Alex Hassan (Duke University) were retired on a strike out and fly out respectively, Tyler Stampone (The College of the Holy Cross) singled up the middle off of Torrington’s closer Steve Strasburg (San Diego State University). Scott Savastano (Franklin Pierce College) followed with a broken bat single through the right side and into the outfield grass. Twister rightfielder Matt Cerione’s (University of Georgia) throw to third was errant, allowing Savastano to advance to second.

Strasburg then struck out Chester Wilson (Southern Utah University) to end the ballgame with the tying run on third and winning run on second.

The Dukes will look to rebound tomorrow night against the Newport Gulls at 5 p.m. at Wahconah Park. The Dukes five game homestand will conclude Monday as the Dukes take on the Manchester Silkworms, making up the Fourth of July rainout.

Season tickets for the Dukes are still available. Tickets can be purchased online at www.pittsfielddukes.com or by calling (413) 447-DUKE.
