Dukes Snap Home Skid With 3-2 Win Over Westerners
Pittsfield, Mass. (Friday July 6, 2007) – The Pittsfield Dukes
picked up their first home win of the year, their second straight
overall, and move to within three-and-a-half games of the last
playoff spot in the Southern Division.
Chris Powl (West Chester University) threw another gem, and picked
up his second win in as many starts for the Dukes. Powl went eight
innings, scattering nine hits, allowing just two runs, he walked one
and struck out four.
Powl’s last three outings for the Dukes have all be very effective.
On June 26th in Newport, he pitched the final two innings, giving up
just one hit and picked up the save in the Dukes’ second win of the
season. His next outing came two days later in Lowell against the
All-Americans where he threw a complete game, giving up one run on
three hits, he did not walk a batter and struck out seven on the
night.
Alex Hassan (Duke University) had a huge night for the Dukes as he
snapped out of a mini-slump, just one for his last 13, going 3-for-3
with three singles, four stolen bases in four attempts, a walk, and
scored all three of Pittsfield’s runs.
The first run of the ballgame crossed in the bottom of the first
when Scott Savastano (Franklin Pierce College) grounded into a
double-play, plating Hassan and cutting down Tyler Stampone (The
College of the Holy Cross) in the middle.
Hassan’s second run came in the third as he singled, stole both
second and third, and was able to score on an errant throw from
Danbury catcher Brad Pippa (Stetson University). Hassan scored again
in the fifth, after singling and moving to third on a Stampone
double, coming home on an RBI ground out from Savastano, who was
1-for-4 on the night.
With a 3-2 lead after eight innings, the Dukes handed the ball to
righthander Jack Bender (Georgetown University) to close the door.
He did so perfectly facing just three batters, including a strike
out of Carmello Jaime (Miami Daide College) to end the ballgame.
The Dukes will try and spin this momentum into a winning streak as
they will host the Torrington Twisters at 7 p.m. on Saturday July
7th. Saturday is Party at the Park Night, and the Dukes also host
the Newport Gulls and Manchester Silkworms on the next two nights at
Wahconah Park.
Season tickets for the Dukes are still available. Tickets can be
