Dukes-SteepleCats Rained Out After Three at Wahconah
Pittsfield, Mass. (Thursday July 5, 2007) – There were two rain
delays in this ballgame, one lasting around thirty minutes and the
other near forty-five, in the end the field just took too much water
to continue.
The game was initially halted with North Adams centerfielder Max
Pinto (Williams College) leading off the third inning, facing
Pittsfield’s Jose Mendoza (University of Maine). After only six
pitches were thrown, the game’s second rain delay took place with a
2-2 count on Pinto.
Following the second stoppage Charly Bashara (Northeastern
University) took the mound for the Dukes, he finished off the Pinto
at-bat with two balls, issuing a free pass, then struck out Michael
Moras (University of New Haven). Ozzie Borrell followed with what
would soon become the game’s final at-bat lining a base-hit into
centerfield. As Pinto and Borrell rounded their respective bases
they both slipped and fell, which brought rakes and bags of diamond
dust to the field. After just a few minutes of attempted repair
work, umpires Mike Sadowski and George Cox came to the final
conclusion that the field was unplayable.
The Dukes led in the ballgame 1-0 thanks to an RBI double to deep
leftfield by Tyler Stampone (The College of the Holy Cross).
Stampone’s wall shot to left scored Nelson Gomez (Keystone College)
from first base, after Gomez reached on a single to left.
The rain also spoiled what was a good outing from Mendoza who had
gone three scoreless innings and allowing just two hits.
The Dukes will try to get their first home win tomorrow night at
Wahconah Park as they face the Danbury Westerners at 7 p.m.
