Dukes Win Fifth Straight Road Game with Big 8th in Danbury
Danbury, Conn. (Tuesday July 3, 2007) – The Dukes stayed hot away
from Wahconah Park, taking their fifth straight road game with an
8-3 victory against their Southern Division rivals the Danbury
Westerners.
Pittsfield came to bat trailing 3-2 in the top of the eighth.
Danbury brought on their closer Aaron Taylor (Temple College) to
attempt to get the six-out save. Taylor had little luck in the
frame. Nelson Gomez (Keystone College), who was 3-for-5 on the
night, reached on an error by Danbury third baseman Carmello Jaime
(Miami Daide College).
Sam Shaughnessy (Boston College) and Jeff Lieneck (Wheaton College)
followed with back-to-back walks to load the bases for Adam Tempesta
(University of Massachusetts). Tempesta, who had been struggling
coming in the at-bat, 0-for-3 on the night and one for his last 14
at bats, lined a game-tying single in the leftfield, knotting the
game at 3.
Paul Heidler (Longwood University) came through with a line-drive
base hit into leftfield that evaded Dexter Fontenot (University of
Louisiana-Monroe) and rolled to the wall, allowing all three Dukes
to score and ripping the game wide open. Tyler Stampone (The College
of the Holy Cross) and Nelson Gomez added RBI singles in the inning
that saw the Dukes plate six runs on four hits, with three
Westerners errors and two walks mixed in.
Jack Bender (Georgetown University) picked up his first win of the
season in relief of Mitch Clegg (University of Maine). Clegg had
gone six innings, allowing three runs, two earned, on five hits.
Bender through two innings, facing only six batters, he struck out
four and induced a double play after hitting a batter.
The Dukes will be at home looking for their first win at Wahconah
Park on the season against the Manchester Silkworms at 6:30 with
fireworks to follow the contest. The festivities continue all
weekend at Wahconah Park as they will take on the North Adams
SteepleCats in Game 3 of the Battle of the Berkshires series on
Thursday, then host the Westerners, Twisters, and Gulls on Friday
through Sunday, respectively.
Season tickets for the Dukes are still available. Tickets can be
