Grand Slam Dooms Dukes, Fall 5-2 to Newport

Pittsfield, Mass. (Saturday June 30, 2007) – Gabe Saade (Duke University) came into the night’s ballgame hitting at .193 with a double and just two RBIs for the Newport Gulls this season.

Saade blasted a grand slam off of Dukes’ reliever Jack Bender (Georgetown University) in the top of the eighth inning, breaking a 1-1 tie.

The grand slam spoiled a great start turned in by Dukes lefty Bob Buskett (College of New Jersey) who did not factor in the decision. Buskett was perfect through his first ten batters and did not see more than four batters in an inning until the seventh.

Buskett ended his night after six and a third innings, he allowed one run, it was earned, giving up six hits, one walk and struck out six Gulls on the outing. He gave way to Bender in the seventh, who pitched his way out of a bases loaded jam in the frame.

Nelson Gomez (Keystone College) saw his 13-game hitting streak come to an end and finished with an 0-for-4 performance on the night. Scott Savastano (Franklin Pierce) had two hits on the night including an RBI single with two outs in the eighth that cut the Gulls lead to 5-2.

Another bright spot offensively for the Dukes was Paul Heidler (Longwood University) who ended up 2-for-3, with a pair of singles, and scored both of the Dukes runs. He came around in the third on an RBI triple from Alex Hassan (Duke University) and again in the eighth on the Savastano single.

The Dukes are at home again Sunday night as they look to snap their season-long seven game home losing streak against the South Division leading Torrington Twisters at 5 p.m. at Wahconah Park.
