Dukes’ Win Streak Halted at Three, Fall to SteepleCats 5-2
Pittsfield, Mass. (Friday June 29, 2007) – The North Adams
SteepleCats came into Pittsfield riding a two game winning streak
and snapped the Dukes’ longest string of victories on the 2007
season at three.
North Adams leadoff man Sean Conley (University of Pittsburgh) had a
big night for the ‘Cats scoring three times, on two hits, including
a double to leadoff the ballgame and a walk that came in the third.
Conley’s efforts alone were enough to beat the Dukes as Pittsfield
again struggled to push runners across when they had opportunities.
They stranded the bases loaded in the third. They squandered another
golden chance in the fifth as Nelson Gomez (Keystone College)
grounded in a 5-3 double play that ended the inning.
Gomez did have two hits in the ballgame extending his hitting streak
to a very impressive thirteen games. Tony DiCesare (Northeastern
University) also had two hits for the Dukes, and made the defensive
play of the game in right field. Neiko Johnson (University of
Kentucky) hit a fly ball that seemed destined for the gap in
right-centerfield. DiCesare closed quickly and laid out,
full-extension, making the catch and robbing Johnson of extra bases.
Sam Shaughnessy (Boston College) also had a good night at the plate
going one-for-two with two walks, a run scored, and a triple to the
deepest part of Wahconah Park with two outs in the sixth.
The Dukes will be at home again Saturday night as they will host the
Newport Gulls for the first time this season. They have split the
season series with the Gulls at 1-1 in their two trips to Cardines
Field this year. First pitch is scheduled for 7 o’clock at Wahconah
Park.
Season tickets for the Dukes are still available. Tickets can be
