Pittsfield Wins Third Straight, Beat Lowell 9-1
Lowell, Mass. (June 28, 2007) – Chris Powl (West Chester University)
threw a complete game three hitter en route to delivering the Dukes
to their first official winning streak of the season.
Powl’s complete game was the first for a Dukes pitcher this season,
the previous longest performance was Mitch Clegg’s (University of
Maine) six and two-third inning outing against the Manchester on
June 10th at Wahconah Park.
Powl finished the evening without surrendering a walk, striking out
seven, and only having to work out of the stretch to one batter all
night. The one run he allowed came on a solo homerun by Lowell’s
Bobby Brown (University of Maine) in the bottom of the sixth,
cutting the Dukes’ lead to 4-1 at the time.
Pittsfield would tack on five more runs, three in the eighth and two
in the ninth. Alex Hassan (Duke University) had two hits, scored two
runs, and drove in another. He along with the Dukes other top hitter
Jeff Lieneck (Wheaton College) were two of five Dukes to have
multiple hits. Scott Savastano (Franklin Pierce) and Nelson Gomez
(Keystone College) added two hits a piece.
Jim MacDonald (University of Massachusetts) became the first Dukes
player this season to have a three-hit ballgame. MacDonald doubled
and scored in the sixth, had an RBI single and came around to score
again in the eighth, then tripled driving in a run in the ninth.
This was a breakout performance for MacDonald who had been
struggling coming into the night’s action raised his batting average
almost 80 percentage points with the three-for-five night.
The Dukes will be home Friday to take on the North Adams SteepleCats
in Game Two of the Battle of the Berkshires Series between the two
Southern Division rivals. First pitch is slated for 7 p.m. from
Wahconah Park.
