Savastano Signs on as New Dukes Shortstop
Pittsfield, Mass. (June 27, 2007) – Earlier this week, the
Pittsfield Dukes signed Scott Savastano an infielder, predominantly
a shortstop, from Franklin Pierce College.
Savastano, a Plymouth, MA native, played in the NECBL last season as
a member of the Keene Swamp Bats. In his first attempt in the summer
wooden bat league Savastano hit .217 in 27 games, 25 were starts,
had two doubles and drove in three runs.
Savastano improved dramatically and had a monster sophomore year at
Division II powerhouse Franklin Pierce. In only 19 games Savastano
hit at a clip of .357, had a homerun, three doubles, drove in
fourteen runs while scoring eleven himself.
Following his impressive second year, Savastano was made a 28th
round draft pick of the Cleveland in this year’s Major League
Baseball First Year Players Draft, held on June 7th and 8th. He was
one of three Ravens selected in this year’s draft.
In the Dukes’ win on Tuesday in Newport, Rhode Island, Savastano got
the start at shortstop and bat in the three spot for the Dukes who
knocked off the then-division leading Gulls by a count of 7-6.
As a member of the Ravens, Savastano drew attention from Coach
Marron as a rival of his University of Massachusetts-Lowell baseball
squad. “I know Scott from having to play against him. I was
surprised we still had a shot at him at this point in the summer.”
Savastano made his second straight at shortstop Wednesday night as
the Dukes downed the Vermont Mountaineers 3-0.
The Dukes will be on the road again Thursday as they head to Lowell
to take on the All-Americans, and will be home Friday, Saturday and
Sunday. Friday is Game Two of the Battle of the Berkshires Series
between the Dukes and North Adams SteepleCats.
Season tickets for the Dukes are still available. Tickets can be
purchased online at www.pittsfielddukes.com or by calling (413)
447-DUKE.
The Dukes appreciate your support. GO DUKES!!!
