Dukes Rally in Eighth for Second Win in Three Games
Newport, Rhode Island. (June 26, 2007) – Alex Hassan (Duke
University) had two hits, including a two-run double in the middle
of an eighth inning rally for Dukes, then came around to score the
games’ winning run in the same frame, as the Dukes took down the
Newport Gulls 7-6.
Hassan finished up two-for-three, with three RBIs, two runs scored
and a pair of walks to lead the Dukes to their second win of the
season.
Seven Dukes had hits on the evening including Chester Wilson
(Southern Utah University) who delivered Hassan as the eventual game
winner in the top of the eighth on a two-out line drive to right
field that put the Dukes ahead for good.
The starter on the night, Mitch Clegg (University of Maine) looked
very strong through his first four innings of work, but got into
some trouble in the bottom of the fifth. After retiring the leadoff
man in the inning, he allowed seven straight hits to the Newport
Gulls, resulting in five runs in the frame.
Jack Bender (Georgetown University), Charly Bashara (Northeastern
University) and Chris Powl (West Chester University) combined to go
the remaining four and a third innings, not allowing a run on three
hits between them.
Bashara picked up his second win for the Dukes on the season, both
coming out of the bullpen, moving his record to 2-2. Powl, who threw
both the eighth and ninth innings picked up his first save in as
many opportunities for Pittsfield.
The Dukes travel to Montpelier to take on the Vermont Mountaineers
Wednesday night at 6:30. They will be home Friday as they renew
their Battle of the Berkshires rivalry against the North Adams
SteepleCats at 7 p.m. from Wahconah Park.
Season tickets for the Dukes are still available. Tickets can be
