Dukes Suffer Bullpen Let Down, Fall 11-5 in 12 Innings
PITTSFIELD, Mass. (Sunday June 24, 2007) – The game was tied at 3-3
after eleven innings of play with the Concord Quarry Dogs coming to
bat in the twelfth, then things got interesting.
Dukes’ righthander Mike DiCato (University of Massachusetts) took to
the hill for his second full inning of relief against the Quarry
Dogs. DiCato walked Jake Smith (University of Alabama), hit Brad
Agustin (University of Buffalo) with a pitch, then walked Dan Lopez
(University of Pittsburgh) and allowed a two run double to Dylan
Lebidisos (Northwestern State University Louisiana) ending his
outing. Mitch Duggins (Northeastern University) came in and had
similar luck, he did not record an out, allowed all three inherited
base runners to score, and allowed all four of the batters he faced
to reach, who all also came around to score.
Ryan Watson (Harvard University) came in an eventually shut the door
for the Dukes, including striking out the last two Quarry Dogs he
faced to close the disastrous twelfth frame for the Dukes.
The disappointing bullpen collapse spoiled a nice outing by Dukes
starting pitcher Bob Buskett (College of New Jersey) who went six
innings, allowing two runs on four hits, while walking two and
striking out three. He left the game with a 3-2 lead in the sixth.
The Dukes scored two runs in the bottom of the first on a two-out
two-run single by Tony DiCesare (Northeastern University) that
scored Adam Tempesta (University of Massachusetts) and Chester
Wilson (Southern Utah University).
They picked up their third run in the bottom of the third inning on
an RBI single from Nelson Gomez (Keystone College) that plated Alex
Hassan (Duke University).
The Dukes are off Monday and travel to Newport to face the Southern
Division rival Gulls at 6:30 from Cardines Field.
