Ninth Inning Rally Gives Dukes First Victory of 2007
Sanford, Maine. (June 23, 2007) – Trailing 4-1 as they headed to bat
in the top of the ninth, the Dukes rallied, scoring five in the
frame and grabbing their first win of the season 6-4 over the
Sanford Mainers.
Charly Bashara (Northeastern University) picked up the first win of
the Dukes season for the second straight season, pitching an inning
and two thirds shutout innings, surrendering just two hits and two
walks, while striking out two.
Yadiel Lanzo (Keystone College) pitched a perfect ninth, striking
out the side, getting his first save in his NECBL career, throwing
just 15 pitches to get the three Mainers he faced.
The Dukes rally in the ninth started with a leadoff single by Jeff
Lieneck (Wheaton College) through the left side of the Sanford
infield. Paul Heidler (Longwood University) followed with a walk to
put two Dukes on for Kek’ii Zablan (Southern Utah University) who
pinch hit in the frame.
Zablan worked a five pitch walk to load the bases for Adam Tempesta
(University of Massachusetts). Tempesta fell behind on the count,
but was hit in the leg with the one-two offering from Sanford
reliever Michael Gedman (LeMoyne College). A wild pitch then plated
Heidler and opened first base for an intentional walk to Nelson
Gomez (Keystone College). Chester Wilson (Southern Utah University)
followed with an infield single to plate Zablan and the game was
tied at 4-4.
Jim MacDonald (University of Massachusetts) and Phil Cerreto
(Longwood University) followed with fielders’ choices, Cerreto’s
plated the go ahead run on a throwing error from the Sanford third
baseman Scott Guillerault (Wheaton College). The last blow of the
rally was landed on an RBI groundout by Dukes’ centerfielder Tony
DiCesare (Northeastern University).
The Dukes will be at home Sunday night as they attempt to mount
their first winning streak of the season, as they play host to the
Concord Quarry Dogs starting at 5 p.m.
