Dukes Drop Eleventh Straight
Torrington, Conn. (Thursday June 21, 2007) – The Pittsfield Dukes’
early season skid continued Thursday as they fell at the hands of
the Torrrington Twisters by a count of 6-2.
The Dukes’ got another strong outing from right-hander Chris Powl
(West Chester University) who went six innings, allowing four runs,
all earned, on eight hits, he struck out seven while walking only
one. He was relieved by Ryan Watson (Harvard University) who allowed
two unearned runs in two-thirds of an inning, and Mike DiCato
(University of Massachusetts), who went one and a third scoreless,
allowing just one hit to the Twisters.
The Dukes were able to put two runners on in the top of the first
inning. Adam Tempesta (University of Massachusetts) drilled a single
through the left side of the Torrington infield, and was followed by
Nelson Gomez (Keystone College) who placed a ball perfectly through
the right side of the Twisters’ infield. The potential rally was
stopped dead in its’ tracks when Chester Wilson (Southern Utah
University) hit a one-hop shot right at Torrington’s shortstop Chris
Klepps (Siena College) who turned it into an inning ending 6-4-3
double play.
The Dukes’ next opportunity to do damage against the Twisters came
in the top of the ninth against reliever Chris Anderson (Western New
England College), who relieved Kyle Hoffman (James Madison
University) after eight strong innings of work. Anderson got into
trouble surrendering an infield single to Gomez, who moved to second
on a fielders’ choice by Wilson. With one out the wheels fell of for
Anderson as he then walked Mike Belfiore (Boston College), allowed a
single up the middle to Jeff Lieneck (Wheaton College), and then
walked in runs on back-to-back batters, Sam Shaughnessy (Boston
College) and Tony DiCesare (Northeastern University) plating the
only two Dukes runs of the game.
The Dukes will be at home for Game 2 of the Battle of the Berkshires
series against the North Adams SteepleCats, starting at 7 p.m. at
Wahconah Park.
