Big First Not Enough as Dukes Fall 10-7 in Manchester
Manchester, Conn. (Tuesday June 19, 2007) – The Pittsfield Dukes
took their largest lead against any opponent this season in the top
of the first, but not even this was enough as their season-opening
losing streak advances to ten straight.
Following three straight singles to start the game, Chester Wilson
(Southern Utah University) cranked a grand slam that gave the Dukes
a 4-0 margin for error. With Jose Mendoza (University of Maine) on
the hill the Dukes were optimistic as they headed to the bottom of
the frame.
That optimism faded fast as Mendoza surrendered four runs right back
to the Silkworms, who improved their NECBL mark to 5-6. This is the
third time the Silkworms have beaten the Dukes this season, twice at
Wahconah Park previously, by scores of 4-2 and 10-7.
Another bright spot in the offensive lineup for Pittsfield was
Kel’ii Zablan (Southern Utah University) who had a pair of hits on
the evening and also drove in three runs.
It was a back and forth contest that the Silkworms put away in the
bottom of the eighth, they came to bat with the score tied at 7.
Following a walk by J.T. Ross (Northeastern) to heavy hitting Ryan
Lavarnway (Yale University) and an infield hit by Kyle Higgins
(Monmouth University), Ross gave way to the bullpen in the form of
lefty Yadiel Lanzo (Keystone College). Lanzo was greated with an RBI
single by Worms rightfielder Jay Schillaci (Central Connecticut
State University), plating the eventual winning run.
The Dukes are off Wednesday and will travel to Torrington to face
the 9-2 Twisters at Fussenich Park, game time 7 p.m.
Season tickets for the Dukes are still available. Tickets can be
