Another Tough Loss as Dukes Fall 2-1 in Torrington
Torrington, Conn. (Wednesday June 13, 2007) – It was another close
game for the Pittsfield Dukes as the Torrington Twisters handed the
Dukes their sixth loss in as many days to begin the 2007 NECBL
season.
Alex Hassan (Duke University) got the start on the hill for the
Dukes and went four strong innings, allowing two runs, one earned,
three hits and striking out three while not walking a batter. He is
saddled with his first loss of the season as the Dukes fall deeper
into the basement of the NECBL Southern Division. Bob Buskett
(College of New Jersey) three four innings out of the bullpen,
giving up no runs on three hits and struck out seven Twisters on the
night.
Hassan’s counterpart was Torrington’s Gary Novakowski (Stony Brook
College) who had a great outing, lasting eight innings giving up one
unearned run, six hits, striking out eight and walking three en
route to picking up his first win of the season.
The Dukes plated their run in the top of the sixth against
Novakowski. Following a leadoff fly out by Kel’ii Zablan (Southern
Utah University), who doubled in the game, Adam Tempesta (University
of Massachusetts) singled with one away. Mike Befliore (Boston
College) followed putting the ball in play to Torrington third
baseman Steven Parker (Brigham Young University) who threw the ball
away up the right field line putting runners on second and third
with one out. This would prove to be the Dukes’ best scoring
opportunity of the night, as it was the first of only two times a
Duke’s runner reached third. Nelson Gomez (Keystone College) hit an
infield single off the handle of his bat, plating the unearned run
and putting runners on the corners. The threat ended when Chester
Wilson (Southern Utah University) grounded into the inning ending
6-4-3 double play.
No one Duke had a multi-hit game, but six different players did have
a knock in the contest. Thursday will be a much needed off day for
the Dukes, who will be back in action Friday night at 7 pm against
the Danbury Westerners at Wahconah Park.
Season tickets for the Dukes are still available. Tickets can be
