SteepleCats Take the Season Opener from the Dukes 5-2

North Adams, Mass. (Friday June 8, 2007) – The Pittsfield Dukes opened their season on the road with Game One of six for the Battle of the Berkshire title against their county rivals.

The SteepleCats came out swinging against first-year Duke Yadiel Lanzo (Keystone College) and touched him up for four runs in three and two-thirds innings in season opener. The Cats got a great pitching performance from returning player Jonathan Ban (Gardner-Web University) who went 6 strong innings, striking out five and walking three, while allowing just one run on four hits.

The Dukes were lead offensively by left fielder Jim MacDonald who was 2-for-4 at the plate with a pair of singles and an RBI. Driving in the other Dukes run was catcher Jeff Rustico (American International College) who drove in the team’s first run with an RBI double in the fifth against Ban.

Sean Conley (Pittsburgh) and Ozzie Borrell (Florida Gulf Coast University) paced the SteepleCats as they combined for six hits and four runs between them.

Mike DiCato (UMass), who relieved Lanzo with two outs in the fourth, looked good in his Dukes debut going three and a third out of the pen, surrendering just one unearned run on three hits while striking out three.

The Dukes will look to Pittsfield native Charly Bashara (Northeastern) to right the ship as they come back to Pittsfield for their home opener Saturday against the Keene Swamp Bats. The game is scheduled to begin at 7p.m. at Wahconah Park.
