Duggins Returns to the Mound for the Dukes
PITTSFIELD, Mass. (Monday, May 7, 2007) – Northeastern starter,
Mitch Duggins returns for his second season as a member of the Dukes
pitching staff. Boston College newcomer, Mike Belfiore will play
multiple roles for the Dukes this summer.
Duggins is an intimidating hurler at 6’7, 230lbs. The big
right-hander is currently relieving for the Northeastern Huskies. So
far this season, the Huskies are 21-14 overall and 10-10 in the
Colonial Athletic Association (CAA). Commenting on their most recent
nine game win streak Duggins said, “We were relaxed and really in a
groove. When we took that three game series from Winthrop that was
when we realized we were doing something special.” As a sophomore,
Duggins was impressive for the Huskies throwing 27.1 innings with a
2.96 ERA. As a Duke in 2006, Duggins struck out 16 batters in only
fourteen innings of work.
When asked about fellow teammate at Northeastern and Dukes’ ace
Charly Bashara he said, “Charly is a very easy guy to get along
with. I’ve been with him for about two years now, and I was the
first kid from Northeastern who saw what he could do last summer.”
Belfiore is playing in his freshman year at Boston College. Before
joining the Eagles, Belfiore built a strong reputation at Commack
High School in Commack, New York. In his senior year, he won the
Suffolk League II MVP for hitting, the Gibson Award for pitching,
and was named first team All-State. In 2006, he won the 2006 Commack
High School Most Outstanding Athlete Award and was then inducted
into the Suffolk County Hall of Fame. Belfiore’s statistics attest
for his recognition as a great ball player. He batted .483 with 3 HR
and 18 RBI. As a pitcher he was 8-0 with a .67 ERA and 78
strikeouts.
Now, Belfiore is playing infield for the Eagles and making some
relief appearances as well. So far this season, he is batting .297
with 20 RBI. Belfiore has equally proven his worth as a fielder with
a .986 fielding percentage and 204 putouts. As a reliever, Belfiore
has thrown 10.1 innings picking up 1 save and 5 strikeouts.
The Dukes are excited for the return of Duggins and the newcomer
Belfiore. Both acquisitions will certainly help the Dukes.
