Dukes retain a righty and add a lefty to their bullpen.
PITTSFIELD, Mass. (Friday, April 6, 2007) – Mitch Clegg,
Pittsfield’s number four starter in ’06, is returning for his second
season as a member of the Dukes rotation. The Dukes also add to
their staff, left-handed pitcher Ryan Watson from Harvard
University.
Clegg, a 6’5 right-handed pitcher, is a sophomore at the University
of Maine. Shortly into the 2007 season, Clegg is 1-1 in four
appearances (two starts) for his Maine Black Bears. In a win over
the University of Pennsylvania, Clegg went 5 1/3 innings striking
out seven hitters, walking only one.
When asked if he was excited about the summer season Clegg replied,
“I’m willing to do anything for the Dukes to win. I talked to Charly
(Bashara) a few days ago, and we reminisced about last year.” There
is no doubt that Clegg was a big part of the Dukes’ pitching staff
last year. He hurled 48.1 innings in 2006, second most for the Dukes
and had a solid 4.47 era.
Watson brings a new arm to the Dukes staff. The southpaw comes out
of the bullpen for the 6-10 Harvard Crimson. He has pitched 7.2
innings for the Crimson and has hitters hitting a dismal .222. Most
recently, Watson pitched three solid innings against the #2 ranked
University of Tampa. Watson said, “We as a team are right where we
want to be in the Ivy League.”
Last year unfortunately, Watson separated his shoulder early in the
season, which limited him to only five appearances. With his health
now back the Dukes expect a strong showing from Watson this summer.
Watson is also optimistic in saying, “I feel very prepared for this
season and the workload that lies ahead.”
The Dukes are very excited to have both Clegg and Watson on the hill
for them in 2007. More importantly both are excited to be pitching
for the Dukes.
The Dukes home opener is June 9th VS. the Keene Swamp Bats.
